An AP/IB A is worth 5.0 weighted here; a Regular A stays at 4.0.

Weighted vs. unweighted, in one calculator

A weighted GPA gives extra credit for course difficulty. Most schools add+0.5 to the grade-point value of Honors courses and +1.0to AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment courses — so an A in an AP class is worth 5.0 instead of 4.0. An unweighted GPA ignores course level entirely and stays on the plain 4.0 scale. Both numbers come from the exact same grades; only the scale changes.

The formula

Weighted GPA = Σ (grade points + level bonus) × credits ÷ total credits

Note: exact bonus values vary by school — some cap weighted GPA at 5.0, others use a different scale entirely. Check your school's specific policy.

Frequently asked questions

Add a bonus to the grade-point value of Honors and AP/IB courses before averaging — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — then multiply by credits and divide by total credits, same as an unweighted GPA.

On most weighted scales, a 3.7 falls in the “strong” range but below the top tier — where a student is landing usually depends on how many Honors/AP courses factored into that number, since the same letter grades produce a higher weighted GPA than unweighted.

A 4.0 weighted GPA is typically only average-to-good if most of your schedule is Honors or AP — since those courses can push a GPA well above 4.0, a flat 4.0 may mean mostly regular-level A's rather than a maxed-out weighted schedule.

Most colleges recalculate your GPA using their own formula regardless of what your transcript shows, but it's still worth reporting both — this tool shows them side by side.
